Pipo is a BBS (Bulletin Board System).
The features of GNU Pipo-BBS include:
- Text and ANSI interfaces with colour for ANSI compatible terminals.
- Online help.
- Telnet connection (socket one planned).
- Ability to talk instantly to a user connected at the same time as you.
- Long term messages which can be viewed by non-connected users.
They can be seen by all users, a specific group of users or one
specific user...
- Log of recently exchanged messages, available even after logout.
- Ability to view the list of currently connected users.
- Mappable keys.
- Customisation of colours.
- Robots.
- Lot of information available on users (available only with that
user's permission).
- Games.
- Easy-to-implement multi language system (see Atlantis-BBS implementation).
- Different types of messages, including ASCII-Art.
- Discussion lists (a little bit like IRC).
- A voting system.
- A socket server, because telnet connections are really too slow.
- A graphical socket client.
- Maybe a Java client.
- A lot of other stupid games (e.g. Game of Life), we just need
programmers to write them.
Pipo-BBS is known to run on these operating systems
regardless of the machine type (with a few hacks):
- GNU/Linux 2.0
- SunOS 5.5
- IRIX 5.0
- HP/UX 10.0
The name "pipo" is the French for the English "foo" or "bar".
It was suggested as a name for Atlantis-BBS implementation
before a theme was found. French programmer put ``Pipo'' constantly when they
talk about computer stuff. Take a look at this
French site
which makes fun of computer related things.
I don't think this word has a real meaning. But the users of the
Atlantis-BBS have
proposed it and voted for it as the name of the code.
See the software page for
